Overview

Hemispheres is a collection of extraordinary music at Sydney Opera House from all parts of the world. Distinguished by its high quality, the full program presents artists who often verge on the legendary in their own cultures, and may be revelations to Australian audiences. As well, the program brims with virtuosity in styles and instruments that are not part of the mainstream. The world is full of fantastic music and Hemispheres will transport you to the most exotic sounds on the planet.

In 2010, Hemispheres features Sydney side-shows for artists playing at two of Australia's best loved music festivals - Womadelaide and Byron Bay BluesFest. We encourage you to come and experience the world of great music.

2008 Artists

Yasmin Levy  - 1 March 2008
www.yasminlevy.net

“What a woman. What a voice… Levy is a diva in the best sense of the word: she is gorgeous and sensuous with a voice that leaves audiences shivering with delight.”  THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

“What a wonderful sound she creates. Her highly developed technique of Arabic florid singing transplants itself beautifully into the ornamental, balladic feel of flamenco. Possessing a seamless purity of it’s own, her fusion seems to have found the point perfectly where these two musical cultures meet,… she is a remarkable artist”  THE AUSTRALIAN

Cesaria Evora - 3 & 4 March 2008
www.cesaria-evora.com

“Cesaria Evora instantly exudes such magnetism as to pull you forward in your seat… This is world music verite”  SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

“The diminutive Cape Verdean singer had total control of the Opera House Concert Hall from the moment she entered the room… Indeed, the music ws so infectious and, by the end of the set, most of the audience were on their feet dancing and clapping along” DAILY TELEGRAPH

The Anoushka Shankar Project – 14 June 2008
www.anoushkashankar.com

“This was a great night’s entertainment and shows that Anoushka Shankar is worthy of George Harrison’s lavish praise when he said of her: ‘‘Ravi – to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music.’’ MANLY DAILY

Emir Kusturica + The No Smoking Orchestra – 29 June 2008
www.thenosmokingorchestra.com

“With circus-like showmanship and a Balkan-folk-gone-rock’n’roll the eight-piece band turned the usually formal Concert Hall into a close approximation of a Belgrade drinking parlour…the concert was unforgettable”  THE AUSTRALIAN

50 Years of Bossa Nova - 10 September 2008

www.goranbregovic.co.yu

“The energy set this concert apart as much as its scope. It exploded off the stage and engulfed the room” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

“The Bregovic experience is quite a thing to behold… the audience went off like firecrackers.” THE AUSTRALIAN
