YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE ARTS AUSTRALIA (YPAA) – ARTS EDUCATION DAY
SPEAKING IN TONGUES – HOW DO WE TRANSLATE THE ARTS IN EDUCATION, AND EDUCATION IN THE ARTS?
Young People and the Arts Australia (YPAA) is the national peak body for organisations and practitioners engaging children and young people in the arts. Our Arts Education Day, Speaking in Tongues, will challenge participants to rethink the way the arts and education relate to each other.
The day consists of inspiring keynotes, facilitated sessions, question and answer time and access to key decision makers. Given the expansion of the arts in the National Curriculum, it will be an event for educators to learn more about the language of the arts, and artists the language of educators. It will model inspired practice and form for the arts and education, and engage participants in critical debate on the future arts ecology of this country, with the aim of building a strong voice for sustained arts education outcomes.
Suitable audiences include: specialist and generalist teachers and educators; arts practitioners and organisations that engage or are seeking to engage with the Education sector; principals; curriculum leaders; pre-service teachers; parents; students and anyone who would like to share their opinions about arts in the curriculum.
Monday 16 July, 9am – 5pm

INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY LAUNCH 2012
Sydney Opera House partners with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) again in
2012 to host the launch of Indigenous Literacy Day 2012. Indigenous Literacy Day is a national event organised by the ILF to raise awareness and funds for literacy for Indigenous kids living in remote parts of Australia. In the past two years, schools and libraries, together with individuals and corporate businesses, have helped raise funds to send over 60,000 books to more than 200 remote communities.
Schools from across Sydney are invited to attend the 2012 launch and take part in the ‘Great Book Swap’ - where students bring along a book they’ve read and enjoyed and can swap this for a ‘new’ book which has been brought along by another child. Performances & readings by very special guests will be a part of the fun and a number of high profile ambassadors and authors will participate in the event.
Your school can help buy books and literacy resources for Indigenous children living in remote communities by holding your own 2012 ‘Great Book Swap Challenge’ and raising funds. For the chance for your school to be involved in Indigenous Literacy Day at Sydney Opera House, register early for The Great Book Swap and see the ILF website for further details.
