Just announced, Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela will curate Spring Dance - Australia’s only annual international festival of contemporary dance - for three years starting in 2012.

Over a two week season this August, Rafael Bonachela will present a program of dance that features some of the most innovative, sophisticated and beautiful work being created in Australia and around the globe, in venues across Sydney Opera House.

‘Dance has long been at the heart of the Sydney Opera House program so we are thrilled to be working with an artist of Rafael’s stature for the next three years, and look forward to seeing how the festival develops under his direction.” Jonathan Bielski, Executive Producer at Sydney Opera House.

Spring Dance is a celebration of all human movement, from the intellectual and intense to the joyous and lyrical. We look forward to seeing you at the House for Spring Dance 2012.

RAFAEL BONACHELA

RAFAEL BONACHELA
CURATOR OF SPRING DANCE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY

Rafael Bonachela was born in Barcelona where he began his early dance training before moving to London, joining the legendary Rambert Dance Company in 1972.  He remained with Rambert as a dancer and Associate Choreographer until 2006 at which time he established the Bonachela Dance Company to concentrate on the rapid rise of his choreographic career.  During his years based in London, Rafael received countless choreographic commissions from companies around the world as his reputation of creating dynamic and innovative work developed.

In 2008, Rafael premiered his first full-length production 360° for SDC. Less than six months later, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Company, where he has since programmed and commissioned  dance works from Australian and visiting international guest choreographers which are regularly presented alongside his own creations.

Rafael Bonachela’s internationally recognised talent has seen him work not only with contemporary dance at the highest level but also with artists from popular culture, such as Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner.
