Sydney Opera House presents

Boxy George
AUTISM FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE
Recommended Ages 5-10

On Saturday 6 October, Sydney Opera House will welcome friends, carers and families to a special autism-friendly performance of Theater Refleksions’ BOXY GEORGE The performance has been chosen to ensure everyone is able to enjoy the experience in a supportive, friendly, environment.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Madsen is alone. His life is simple and he is in control. One day, a box turns up. Soon there are more - and soon they have legs. Before long, Madsen's world is turned upside down. Boxy George is an intimate theatre experience designed for children to share in the delight of puppetry.

For this performance, lighting and sound elements will be adjusted to ensure consistency throughout the performance, and front of house staff will be briefed to ensure ease of exit & re-entry to the auditorium if necessary.

To help families prepare for the experience, Sydney Opera House will provide a social story online which takes us step by step towards the performance. Check here closer to show time for this information.

ACCESS COMMUNITY

The arts as a leader in accessibility

A dynamic conversation about past and future engagement for disability and the arts took place at the monthly SAMAG seminar.

Amanda Tink Training Coordinator, Accessible Arts presented a thought-provoking perspective on the capacity for the arts to be a leader in accessibility and promoted the use of Disability Awareness Training to achieve this. Other speakers included Jenny Spinak Program Manager, Accessibility at Sydney Opera House and Jan Barham, Byron Shire Mayor and NSW Legislative Council Greens member.

A presentation was delivered by Daniel Kojta, Western Sydney based new media artist, emerging curator and recipient of the 2010 Accessible Arts Bundanon Residency.

Hitch, a short film directed by Kojta posing questions about disability, was screened and the seminar challenged those in attendance to consider ways to progress accessibility by stimulating action on a daily basis.

SAMAG is a not for profit organisation formed by a number of arts professionals and provides a forum for discussion and to raise awareness of current arts issues through monthly seminars and a year long program that address topics and issues of interest to arts and cultural workers.

Improving access to heritage buildings is more than possible

Plans to install a lift at Sydney Theatre Company Wharf 4 have been realised after combined efforts from the Pier Group, STC's fundraising committee, Arts NSW and several donors supporting their Upgrading the Wharf project. As part of the project, installation of the new lift now allows easy access from the street level to the walkway and Wharf 4 mezzanine at the venue.

A major presenting partner at Sydney Opera House, the theatre company presents a number of accessible performances each season in the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House and at The Wharf.
