PHILOSOPHICAL FRAMEWORK
Goal:
Sydney Opera House has a commitment to creating a centre of excellence for young people's enjoyment of contemporary performing arts experiences and their engagement with arts practice.
This goal seeks to place young people at the centre of cultural activity within Sydney Opera House Youth and Education Program. It is based on the belief that young people are active consumers of the arts and artists in their own right and their interests should be reflected in all programming choices and development opportunities. This goal acknowledges the place and importance of teachers and adult care providers as the predominant decision makers in young people's cultural activities. Sydney Opera House Youth and Education Program aims to dispel the misnomer that young people are our future audiences and celebrates their presence in the House as current audience members with sophisticated artistic tastes.
Objectives:
- Showcase the highest standard of excellence and creativity from leading companies in Australia and internationally who produce work for and by young people.
- Create a unique and contemporary arts program that communicates directly to young audiences.
- Establish a centre of excellence for young people's enjoyment of contemporary performing arts.
- Encourage young people's interest and engagement with the performing arts and art making.
- Foster the development of meaningful life skills through the interaction of young people with a range of performing arts experiences.
- Offer opportunities for teachers to broaden and develop their own classroom practice through professional development workshops with artists and the support of Teachers' Notes.

Sydney Opera House Youth and Education Program aims to realise these set objectives by committing to programs that offer exceptional access, active engagement and quality contemporary performing arts experiences.

HOUSE HISTORY
Sydney Opera House is a masterpiece of late modern architecture. It is admired internationally and proudly treasured by the people of Australia. It was created by a young architect who understood and recognised the potential provided by the site against the stunning backdrop of Sydney Harbour. Denmark’s Jørn Utzon gave Australia a challenging, graceful piece of urban sculpture in patterned tiles, glistening in the sunlight and invitingly aglow at night. Jorn Utzon died in Copenhagen in November 2008 aged 90.
In its short lifetime, Sydney Opera House has earned a reputation as a world-class performing arts centre and become a symbol of both Sydney and the Australian nation.
