CARMEN GET IT - BIZET
SYDNEY PHILHARMONIA CHOIRS
A concert presented by choristers from across Australia and abroad who come together in an annual choral weekend to bring to life one of the greatest works in the operatic repertoire. Up to 1,000 singers will be joined onstage by accomplished soloists Helen Sherman, Andrew Jones and the Philharmonia Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Brett Weymark.
ChorusOz has been going from strength to strength since its first season in 2005, revelling in some of the mightiest works that a choir can sing. This year, it’s time to move into new territory and discover the sexy, seductive world of grand opera with highlights from Bizet’s Carmen. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s brilliant and it’s got your name on it: if you love to sing, we’d love to have you on board!
Carmen scandalised the respectable opera-goers of Paris at its first performances in 1875. There on the stage were people who would never be accepted in polite society: a promiscuous gypsy factory worker, an ordinary soldier, and a tabloid-hero bullfighter. Not only had Bizet written an opera about them, he had taken them seriously as people, with real emotions, and dared to turn their seamy, steamy intrigues into high tragedy. Bizet himself died just three months after the premiere, believing his opera to have been an abject failure, but history has proved those straight-laced Parisians wrong time and time again. These days, Carmen is in the top three most-performed operas in the world – come along and find out why!
