This award-winning virtuoso of the piano, who recently recorded the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, has now embarked on a two-year project to record and perform all the mature piano works of Franz Schubert. His voyage will take him to recital halls across the world, including London, New York, Tokyo, the annual Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg and Sydney.
The music Paul Lewis has chosen to perform for his Utzon Room concert reveals the dizzying range of Schubert’s expressive powers. Yes, this was a man who could write charming, folk works like the German Dances, but it was also a man who was not afraid to experiment. The Sonata No. 14 in A minor takes us into uncharted territory, harmonically and pianistically, and the variations in Sonata No. 16 feel like an explosion of invention.
Two years after Sonata No. 16 was complete Schubert was dead. What was will forever be coloured by the thought of what could have been.
