Cameron Carpenter – The Grand Organ

Cameron Carpenter exists in a kind of parallel world where anything is possible…where outrageous showmanship can sit with an uncompromising musical intellect. The Age

Two big stars fight for the spotlight in this special event in the Utzon Music Series.

The first is Cameron Carpenter, virtuoso organist and showman par excellence. Carpenter stunned audiences at the 2011 YouTube Symphony Orchestra concert in Sydney when he appeared in the organ loft in a spangled catsuit, then played like an angel. He combines the encyclopaedic knowledge and scary intensity of a dedicated music scholar with the infectious enthusiasm and outrageous instincts of a real stage performer.

The second big star of this concert is the grand organ of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. Built by Ron Sharp over the course of a decade, the world's largest mechanical tracker-action pipe organ boasts 131 stops, five manuals, foot pedals and 10,154 pipes.

Carpenter will bring this magnificent instrument to life with a program of his favourites from the organ repertoire, including works of J S Bach, Mahler, and some surprises of his own.

While the Sydney Opera House Grand Organ is used throughout the year in orchestral and choral concerts, it is a rare treat to hear a solo recital. Hear the organ in full flight and, with the help of cameras and a suspended screen, see how organists do it with their hands and feet!

Cameron will perform the following repertoire:

Syncretic Prelude and Fugue in D major, based on works by Bach and Mahler, arr. C. Carpenter
Bach Chaconne (BWV 1004) by Ferruccio Busoni
Mahler Symphony No. 5, Mvt V Rondo-Finale, transc. C. Carpenter
Ives Piano Sonata No. 2, Concord Mass., Mvt III The Alcotts
And more…
